North Carolina Husband Delivering Surprise Breakfast Shot By Wife Who Mistook Him For Intruder

A North Carolina man trying to surprise his wife with breakfast ended up being shot in the chest when his wife mistook him for an intruder.

Police said the shooting occurred last Friday morning after Zia Segule left his Fayetteville home for work and his wife Tiffany Segule set the alarm system and went back to bed, WTVD reported.

Zia Segule, a 28-year-old solider at Fort Bragg, returned home to surprise his wife with breakfast in bed. But his return tripped the alarm system and Tiffany shot her husband through the closed bedroom door, striking him in the chest.

Investigators are not yet sure if Zia announced it was him when he returned through the front door or if he tried shutting off the alarm, the station reported. The husband was treated at a hospital and was reportedly walking and talking hours after the 10:15 a.m. shooting.

The only thing he said when asked for comment Friday afternoon was, "I'm good."

Tiffany, 27, was questioned following the shooting and police said she could have been on high alert due to a recent spike in home break-ins around the area, the station reported. Not many other details about the incident were released but it appears police believe the shooting was accidental.

"She was doing what she felt was right to defend herself at the time," Detective Antoine Kincade, spokesman for the Fayetteville Police Department, told WTVD.

Neighbors also said they can understand why Tiffany Segule may have been a bit paranoid.

"I can't believe it just happened, but I understand," neighbor Jose Estrella told the station. "Even at night, I wake up at night and say 'OK, did I just hear something?'

"But I wouldn't open fire just like that," Estrella said.
