"Fashion Police" kicked off its new season Monday night (Jan. 12) following the 72nd Golden Globes. This was the show's first episode since the tragic death of comedienne and "Fashion Police" co-host Joan Rivers.
Her absence was definitely felt throughout the entire episode, but given the circumstances, the cast did their best. E! announced in December that Kathy Griffin would replace the late comic as lead host. At the same time, the network revealed that George Kotsiopoulos would not return and "It's a Brad, Brad World" star Brad Goreski would take his place. Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic are the only two original hosts.
Leading up to the show's premiere, Griffin constantly said she would be taking no prisoners and warned celebrities to watch out.
"I get it! These are some big shoes I'm going to fill. Joan was truly one of a kind. Now I hope you will accept me for me. I'm just Kathy," she said. "Did I say I'm just Kathy? I meant I'm Kathy F**king Griffin and you celebrities better strap yourself in, as I am taking no prisoners. I am not holding back so DAMMIT let's have some fun!"
Unfortunately, it seemed like Griffin did hold back and toned down her jokes out of fear of being too offensive. Personally, it seemed like Griffin was thinking about what to say way too much instead of just letting her jokes come naturally.
Rivers said exactly what was on her mind. Granted, some of her comments rubbed celebrities the wrong way, but her unapologetic attitude was expected. That said, Griffin did crack a few really good jokes about Amal Clooney (she hated her white gloves) and Tina Fey (she called her red carpet look a "disaster"). As far as her fashion critiques, a lot of Twitter users felt the comic didn't know enough about trends to judge someone else's outfit.
It seems like social media was divided on Goreski. The reality star and stylist had some tweets praising him, while others couldn't stand not seeing Kotsiopoulos sitting on the stage. To me, there were times Goreski faded into the background. However, he did give really great fashion critiques and his blazer was amazing!
Overall, I think "Fashion Police" is definitely worth another shot. The more Griffin and Goreski get comfortable doing the show, the better it will be. The one big thing the show needs to change is the background music! The soft techno-type music was a bit loud and very distracting.
"Fashion Police" airs Mondays at 9 p.m.
