It appears after two years of jumping in and out of production, a sequel to the incredibly popular comedy from the 90s, "Dumb and Dumber" will be getting a sequel after all.
Jim Carrey approached the original writers and directors of the first movie, the Farrelly brothers, nearly two years ago to ask if they would be interested in reuniting him and co-star Jeff Daniels to see where their famous characters Harry Dunne and Loyd Christmas are up to after 20 years.
"Jim has been against all sequels, and you know, understandably so. ... But he turned 50 and that will mellow you out, and suddenly he's going, 'Let's have some fun. ... Come on,' and we're going, 'Great,' and so the Farrellys said, 'This isn't a money grab. Let's really write a great second movie that takes the original and then blows it up even further, and so I think they did that," Daniels said in an interview Wednesday according to the New York Post.
In that two-year span, the film has fallen out of production several times. Last year, Carrey even left the project for a brief period out of frustration with the studio. Warner Bros. dropped the movie earlier this month but allowed the Farrelly brothers to shop around for a new production company to pick it up. That pickup came in the form of Universal Studios who immediately green lit the sequel.
Splitsider reports the new, currently titled "Dumb and Dumber To," film will force the two slow-witted friends to deal with the news that one of them may have fathered a child. That child has since developed health problems and needs a kidney donation.
Peter Farrelly broke the news on an episode of The Nerdist Podcast where he revealed filming would begin by August in Atlanta and that the movie will come out sometime next summer, possibly 20 years to the date after the first.
Daniels and Carrey have been busy in their time since the "Dumb and Dumber." Daniels is currently starring in Aaron Sorkin's popular HBO drama "The Newsroom" where he plays the star of the fictional ANC news network. Meanwhile, Carrey will co-star in this summer's super hero comedy "Kick-Ass 2." Trailers for both can be seen below.
