Twitter to Acquire Indian Marketing Startup ZipDial?

Twitter is constantly working to expand its tech reach and to provide the best experience for its users.

In the last six years, Twitter has bought out or acquired TweetDeck, Vine, MoPub and many other startups.

Twitter is currently in negotiations to acquire Indian startup ZipDial, a "mobile marketing company," TechCrunch reported.

"In a cool home-turned-office in Bangalore, a team of brilliant people have turned a phenomenon that is unique to the country into a booming business. That phenomenon is missed calls," Techcrunch wrote about ZipDial last March.

Because phone calls and text messages are so expensive in India, the locals discovered that they can make "missed calls" for free. This method is used to alert others to simple things, such as when you need help, when you arrive somewhere, or when you're ready for a person to perform an action.

ZipDial also uses this feature to advertise products locally. ZipDial convinced advertisers to put certain phone numbers on walls. If a user calls the number then disconnects, the phone number will then send them a text message containing information about various deals, coupons and whatnot. ZipDial CEO Valerie Wagoner said the company's ad campaigns were more effective than any attempts on social media.

If Twitter does acquire ZipDial, "it would be the latest in string of startups in India getting acquired by U.S. companies keen to capitalise on the opportunity to pick up talent, knowledge and traction in a very huge market," according to TechCrunch.

While this service sounds unique, don't expect it to come to the states. Similar products have succeeded in the U.S. (such as Yo), but the practice of communicating via missed calls probably won't catch on in America.
