Apple Pulls iTunes' 'Free Single of the Week' After 11 Years of Service

iTunes is considered to be one of the key homes for music.

Most musicians try to sell their music there and make a key hub for selling their product. But having music on there isn't enough. You need people to know about you. So, convincing iTunes to feature you and your project is a fantastic way to rise to the top and attract everyone's attention. One of the key ways is offering one of your singles to be iTunes' Single of the Week. Too bad Apple is ending that.

Apple hasn't posted a Single of the Week in 2015, which made many wonder if Apple has officially cancelled the deal, Business Insider reported. Someone named "Bob Foss" on the Apple forums wrote that an Apple employee has confirmed that the run of free weekly music has ended.

iTunes first posted its free single on August 3, 2004, and has continued the practice for the last 11 years . . . until now.

This decision came right after Apple cancelled its "12 Days of Christmas" promotion, which offered users access to a wide breadth of free books, games, music and movies after the holidays.

It's likely that Apple removed these free deals after seeing iTunes' recent declining income. It's also likely that the rise of streaming services, like Pandora and Spotify, have taken a bite out of Apple's iron grip on the music market.

However, the fact that users are required to use iTunes to update their iPhones and iPads will mean that Apple's userbase isn't going too far.
