NFL Rumors: Oakland Raiders Targeting Jack Del Rio as Head Coach

The Oakland Raiders are nearing a deal with Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio to become their next head coach, according to ESPN.

Del Rio reportedly interviewed Tuesday night with team owner Mark Davis, general manager Reggie McKenzie and former Raiders coach John Madden. The Hall of Fame coach is a Del Rio supporter.

Tony Sparano, who was the interim coach for the final 12 games of the season, was the other finalist for the job.

Oakland had also reached out to former New York Jets and Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and former Broncos and Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan.

However, Del Rio emerged as the front runner and is expected to sign a deal sometime today.

Del Rio was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2011, going 68-71 during his time there and reaching the postseason twice. He also filled in for ex-Broncos head coach John Fox in 2013 when he was suffering from health issues.

The Broncos ranked third overall in total defense this season and led the league in forcing three-and-outs.
