A teenager in trouble with the law was celebrated as a hero when he saved the life of the Florida officer who arrested him, police said.
Jamal Rutledge, 17, and three officers are to be honored at the Fort Lauderdale Commission Meeting next Wednesday for their bravery in the September 2014 incident, NBC Miami reported.
Rutledge was being booked at the Fort Lauderdale jailhouse on a probation violation charge of criminal mischief and burglary when arresting officer Franklin Foulks collapsed to the ground of an apparent heart attack.
Springing into action, Rutledge began yelling and kicking the jail's security fence to alert the other cops- all while he was in handcuffs.
Officers arrived and quickly helped their fallen comrade, removing Foulks' shirt and using a defibrillator to stimulate his heart, NBC Miami reported. Emergency responders arrived and transported him to Broward Health Medical Center.
Fort Lauderdale police said medical staff told them it was Rutledge's actions and the officers' immediate response that saved Foulks' life.
