YouTube to Host Alternative Super Bowl Halftime Show Featuring EpicMealTime, Tobuscus, Freddie Wong

The Super Bowl, a perfect time for the family to get together. There's the game for the football fans, the ads for the non-fans and the halftime show for the music fans in your life. However, some of us aren't willing work through two and a half hours of sports just to watch Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz for 20 minutes. Thankfully, YouTube is looking to provide an alternative.

Bloomberg reports that YouTube is looking to provide an alternative to the Super Bowl halftime show that will feature many of your favorite YouTube stars.

The show will be hosted by Harley Morenstein, the leader from "food stunt" show EpicMealTime. The show will also include musical performances and stunts from popular YouTube creators, as well as fake ads produced by other makers. The show will stream live on YouTube.com during the halftime show on Sunday Feb. 1.

But why does YouTube think it can take on the Super Bowl, the most-viewed program in America? Last year, the Super Bowl received more than 111 million viewers.

YouTube told Bloomberg that the growing profile of video creators like Freddie Wong (of RocketJump/Video Game High School) and Toby Turner (of Tobuscus) will help it attract an audience. According to Youtube, the participating creators (whose names Youtube chose not to release) have 60 million subscribers between them.

YouTube says the project is an attempt to appeal to those who don't care about the sports but love the ads. It will also be a good chance for the company to attract its fans and gain new viewers for creators.

Between this Halftime Show and its upcoming interview with President Obama, it's clear that the big voices in the collective "YouTube culture" are trying to reach out to the mainstream.

The YouTube Halftime Show will be a combination of work between Los Angeles-based Collective Digital Studio, a digital network that hosts most of the involved creators.
