Teen Who Died On Prom Night: Boyfriend Charged With Assault

An 18-year-old has been charged with assault in the death of his 17-year-old prom date after she was found dead in a Houston hotel room in May, KHOU reported on Friday.

Eddie M. Herrera, Jacqueline Gomez's former boyfriend, was charged his week.

Herrera's mother allegedly provided alcohol, hydrocodone and the hotel room for the teen couple. The prom happened at the same hotel earlier in the evening.

Herrera admitted to chocking Gomez, but said it was during rough sex and that she was still alive when they fell asleep. In the morning, Gomez was unresponsive. He told police that the two had drank alcohol before falling asleep in the room, Chron reported.

When Herrera noticed Jackie wasn't breathing, he called his mother who was also staying at the hotel. She came to the room and helped put clothes on Jackie. They didn't call 911, but instead tried to see if their was a doctor on staff. The hotel eventually called 911.

Jackie was pronounced dead at the scene by the Houston Fire Department. It is still being decided whether Herrera's mother will face charges in the girl's death.

Herrera remains in jail on a $50,000 bond.
