NHL RUMORS: Montreal Canadiens GM Bergevin Will Be Buyer At Trade Deadline?

The Montreal Canadiens aren't a team with a lot of holes.

They're tied for second in the Atlantic with the Detroit Red Wings, fourth in the Eastern Conference and, as winners of seven of their last 10, seem well on their way to the NHL season's second act.

Even more importantly, they're the sixth best team in the league when it comes to advanced metrics, with a 55 goals for percentage in 5-on-5.

But despite their strong overall play and the positive contributions they're seeing from some younger members of the roster - like Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher - Montreal GM Marc Bergevin may still be in the market for some lineup upgrades.

TSN Insider Bob McKenzie, appearing on Ottawa's TSN 1200 on Thursday, as transcribed by NicholsOnHockey.com, said that, like Bergevin's deal to acquire Thomas Vanek last season, he expects the Habs to be busy - and be buyers - ahead of the March trade deadline.

"Up front, yeah, I think you're right," McKenzie said. "They're always looking for more scorers. To get bigger. All the things they were looking for from Vanek last year that for the most part he didn't really give them outside of a couple of bursts here or there in the playoffs."

The notion of getting bigger up front seems like a constant refrain in Montreal - of their top two lines, only Max Pacioretty and Galchenyuk tip the scales at over 200-pounds.

David Desharnais and Brendan Gallagher, 5-feet-7 and 5-feet-9 respectively, are both under 180 pounds.

The NHL is a speed-based game and the Canadiens are nothing if not fast, but they lack a talented, net-driving presence, a big, physical guy that can be a tough, hard-to-move body.

And while Bergevin's main focus would probably be on the lineup's front, McKenzie said he wouldn't mind upgrading a spot - specifically a third-pairing spot like Bryan Allen's - with a bigger body on the blueline.

"They appear to have lots of puck-movers back there," McKenzie said. "Maybe they'd like another big body that could really dominate, something that would have been an upgrade on Bryan Allen. But that type of player that brings size and heaviness to the game, but also some mobility."
