According to a report at Gamepur, the PS4 Slim may be coming sooner than was originally thought, as Samsung today announced that it has begun mass-producing the industry's first 8 gigabit (1GB) GDDR5 DRAM memory chips.
Rumors that the memory may be included in an upcoming gaming system were fostered by Joo Sun Choi, executive vice president of memory sales and marketing at Samsung, stating that: "We expect that our 8GB GDDR5 will provide original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with the best graphics memory solution available for game consoles as well as general use notebook PCs."
Additionally, Samsung's press release stated that the chips are designed for use in "on-board graphics memory for game consoles."
Although these comments could relate to any number of systems, a new model PS4 seems to add up because Sony's powerhouse console already uses 16 512MB GDDR5 chips from Samsung. Switching to eight 1GB chips would lead to discernible space and cost savings, which Samsung itself confirmed: "Combining only eight of the new 8GB chips will achieve the same density as the 8 gigabytes (GB) needed in the latest game consoles."
With the PS4 being the only console to make use of GDDR5, Samsung's hint was fairly obvious, with gaming forums and social media already abuzz with plenty of conjecture and supposition. My take on this news is: the Slim is defnitely coming and it will be sooner rather than later.
