Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has had just about the greatest start to an NFL career one could possibly have. And it might get even better.
In three seasons, he's 36-12 as a starter (including 22-2 at home). He's got one Super Bowl ring on his hand already, and could add a second in just a matter of weeks. He has a career regular season passer rating of 98.6, and he set career highs in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns this season. Basically, Wilson is really good at football.
He's also in line for a contract extension soon.
Wilson changed agents last month as he prepares for negotiations with Seattle on what should be a mammoth new deal. Wilson is one of the top quarterbacks in the league and has improved his game every single season. It's possible that his next contract could make him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL.
Ironically, Green Bay Packers signal-caller Aaron Rodgers (who Wilson beat this past weekend) is the top earner at the QB position, with an annual salary of $22 million. Wilson is scheduled to make just less than $800,000 in 2015 as a former third-round pick. The Seahawks are reportedly prepared to allow a handful of free agents to leave this offseason in order to make room for Wilson's new deal, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
The Seahawks have already demonstrated a willingness to take care of their own star players. They made Earl Thomas the highest-paid safety in the league (deservingly so) while also handing out big deals to Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor. A record-breaking deal (at least until the Indianapolis Colts agree to an extension with Andrew Luck) for Wilson is likely next on the docket.
