A Chinese couple welcomed five babies without the use of any fertility treatment after having trouble conceiving for six years, Fox News reported on Monday.
Wu Junping, 33, and her husband Zhang Yongli, 34, got married in 2008, quickly deciding to have a family. Wu became pregnant just as the couple was about to give up trying.
But the couple became alarmed a short time into her pregnancy when they found out that it wasn't going to be a typical pregnancy: Wu was expecting five children.
"My biggest worry was my wife had been ill for a while before she got pregnant, and had not fully recovered when she suddenly learned that she was pregnant with five babies," Yongli said. "We inquired about the possibility of having the number reduced, but were told that it wasn't possible to abort some babies without putting all [at] risk, and so we decided it was all or nothing and to take the risk."
The smallest child, a girl, did not survive after being born too early, China.org reported. The other four siblings are in neonatal intensive care at a local hospital, but Yongli noted that doctors have told the couple their children have a good rate of surviving.
But Yongli and Wu worry they won't be able to make ends meet with so many children. Yongli is an agricultural worker and is concerned his salary won't be enough.
