TLC members Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozondo "Chilli" Thomas want to release one last album under the moniker that still includes their lost group mate, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes.
Watkins and Thomas will dedicate the final album to their fans and in exchange have asked them to contribute to the project through a Kickstarter campaign. The group has set a goal of $150,000, much less than the millions provided by a major record label but a price adequate enough to provide them complete control over production.
"Our final album will stay true to the TLC sound, always confronting the real issues and life experiences that we all must face every single day, everywhere. We write music that people relate to...timeless music. No matter the trends, we feel like our music is always relevant," the group wrote on the Kickstarter page.
The initial goal will go toward a writing session in the studio with a producer and engineer. Any money raised beyond that point will give the group the funds to book music producers plus writing, mixing and recording sessions.
"Every penny we raise during this campaign will go towards MAKING this final album together with you!" the group wrote on the Kickstarter page.
As of Jan. 19, the group had raised nearly $34,000.
TLC released its last album "3D" in November 2002, seven months after Lopes died in a car crash. The album debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and received two Grammy nominations.
All Kickstarter backers will receive special rewards based on how much they donate. Rewards include a digital album copy, handwritten and autographed lyrics, a slumber party with each of the ladies or a photo shoot with the group.
TLC has sold 65 million records worldwide and is ranked as the best-selling American female group of all time. TLC also won five Grammy awards and had four No. 1 singles, plus 10 Top 10 singles.
The untitled album is expected to drop in September.
