Boston Hospital Shooting: One Person Shot, Suspect Arrested At Brigham and Women’s Hospital

One person was shot and a suspect was captured after gunfire broke out Tuesday morning at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The victim's injuries are "life-threatening," the Boston Police Department said, adding that the unidentified suspect has been arrested and taken into custody after being located, ABC News reported.

The "situation [is] under control," and the gun has been recovered, the Boston Police department tweeted.

"There has been a shooting in the Shapiro building, and the suspect has been apprehended," the hospital said in a statement. "The Shapiro building is no longer in lockdown. More information will be shared as it becomes available."

Shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the shooting occurred in the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center on the second floor, a research facility located across the street from the hospital's main entrance, according to the hospital.

"A security guard came in and said we need to evacuate the building immediately," James Patelli told the CBS affiliate. "People started yelling 'get down, get down.'"

A lockdown at the hospital was lifted after the suspect was taken into custody, which had been under a Code Black, meaning no additional patients were being accepted, The Boston Globe reported.

Although the Massachusetts State Police responded to the initial emergency call, the investigation is currently being led by the Boston Police Department.

The victim was a male cardiac surgeon, a source told WBZ-TV, with other sources telling WCVB-TV that the suspect is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

However the condition of both the victim and suspect remains unclear, authorities said.

Meanwhile, several road and subway closures have been reported in the area. No other information was immediately available.
