The mother of Cheyenne Phillips, one of the Kentucky teens accused of a multi-state crime spree over the course of two weeks, has been arrested, USA Today reported on Tuesday.
The arrest comes just a day after Phillips, 13, and her 18-year-old boyfriend, Dalton Hayes, were taken into custody in Florida.
Sherry Peters is accused of taking her daughter from Cheyenne's great-grandparent's house on Jan. 3 when she wasn't allowed to. She is facing a custodial interference charge and is being held on $50,000 bail.
In an interview after Cheyenne was found, she said she is estranged from her young daughter and wanted to be more involved in her life.
"We're going to do our best ... to help her through the troubles that she has probably has gotten into out there and get her back to her 13-year-old normal-age life," Peter said.
Hayes and Phillips are accused of stealing three vehicles, cashing phony checks and eluding capture for two weeks across five southern states. Their "Bonnie and Clyde" romance came to a halt when they were arrested on Sunday.
Peters was barred from contacting her children and lost custody of Cheyenne when she was three. Glendon Hart and his wife, Loraine Hart, have been raising Cheyenne ever since.
"We love her to death," Loraine Hart said of Cheyenne. "She's a sweet little girl. The night she didn't come home, we were up all night."
