The whirlwind of activity surrounding the Chicago Bears isn't done quite yet.
The Bears are reportedly going hard after former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase for the same position in Chicago. That would make a ton of sense as the ex-Broncos head coach is now the top man in Chicago as well. Gase is rumored to be interviewing for the position sometime today, but there are already a handful of reports (unconfirmed) saying that the job is his.
Gase's name had been mentioned as a possible head coaching candidate for the San Francisco 49ers and the Broncos, but each team decided to go in a different direction. The Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns also filled their open OC positions, making the Bears' gig not only a good fit but one of the last available ones as well.
Bears fans should be pretty excited about the team's recent coaching hires. Fox has led two different teams to the Super Bowl in his career. Newly hired defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was pursued hard by multiple teams but decided to head to Chicago. Gase would be another fantastic addition as the team continues to undergo significant offseason changes.
Gase has been the OC for the Broncos since 2013. In his two seasons, Denver ranked first and fourth in yards per game. They've also ranked first and second in points per game in that span. Fangio, meanwhile, has been in charge of San Fran's defense since 2011. In that time, the 49ers have never finished the regular season lower than fifth in total defense.
The Bears went just 5-11 this season after going 8-8 last year under former head coach Marc Trestman. During the regular season, Chicago's offensive coordinator admitted to saying that the franchise had "buyer's remorse" after signing quarterback Jay Cutler to a deal worth more than $120 million. Cutler threw 18 interceptions this season yet still managed to post the second-best passer rating (88.6) of his career.
If Gase is to be Chicago's new offensive coordinator, he'll have to improve an offense that badly underachieved this season and finished just 21st in yards per game (319) and 23rd in points per game (19.9).
