Twitter Expands its User Range with ZipDial Acquisition

Twitter has a chance to obtain even more users from around the world, announcing Tuesday that it has bought India-based startup ZipDial.

The mobile marketing company has been helping advertisers reach phone-owning consumers that are trying to avoid paying high charges for texting and calling with mobile devices, according to TechCrunch.

Facebook was also rumored to be trying to buy ZipDial, which hints at how appealing brands have found the startup's service.

If a consumer doesn't answer an advertiser's call, ZipDial will send the person free texts or voicemails with information like sports scores and coupons, the Associated Press reported. This service is provided in growing markets that experience not only expensive mobile data, but limited Wi-Fi connections.

ZipDial, founded in 2010, says on its website that it has created campaigns for a variety of major companies, including PepsiCo and Mattel Inc.

The acquisition gives Twitter users the chance to automatically receive tweets through texts, which could be an alternative to going on the San Francisco company's website or app, the AP reported. Twitter said the deal makes its service available in India, Brazil, Indonesia and other countries that are just starting to get internet access.

The financial terms of the deal have yet to be revealed.
