Tragedy struck a Florida family on Wednesday when a 2-year-old boy got a hold of his father's loaded gun and fatally shot himself, WFLA reported.
Pinellas County sheriffs say the shooting occurred after Kevin Ahles put his 2-year-old son Kaleb into the family car while other relatives were helping the boy's parents move out of their Eastlake home.
Kaleb found a .380 caliber handgun in the glove box.
"The father turned around, heard the gun shot go off, turned around, found the child in the car, saw the gunshot wound to his chest, saw the child bleeding," Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told WFLA.
The toddler's mother, Christina Nigro, and another relative administered CPR while paramedics raced to the scene. Kaleb was pronounced dead upon arrival at Trinity Hospital.
The incident comes just three days after a Missouri 9-month-old was accidentally killed when his brother, age 5, found a handgun lying on a nearby bed. Foul play is not suspected but police are investigating the owner of the gun, believed to be a family member.
While Pinellas sheriffs are still investigating Wednesday's shooting, Gualtieri said the parents will most likely not be charged.
"In a situation like this, where it looks like the gun was secured, they took reasonable steps, and you can lawfully keep a gun in a vehicle in a glove box," Gualtieri told Fox 13.
"I don't think anybody can punish these parents any more than what they've been punished," the sheriff added.
