NHL to Broadcast Games Live with GoPro Cameras

GoPro is working with the NHL and NHLPA to use professional hockey players to broadcast games live.

The deal will have players on the ice wear GoPro cameras and provide real-time HD footage of their games from their perspective, according to TechCrunch. The Live Broadcast Solution, which GoPro created with Vislink, will be used in the partnership, which aims at capturing game footage throughout the entire 2015 season.

The team-up with the NHL serves as a shift for GoPro, which normally provides cameras for snowboarding, mountain biking, skateboarding and other action sports. The camera maker's Live broadcast Solution has already been used in the winter X games by gold medal winner Colton Moor, who wore it in Thursday's Speed & Style snowmobile competition.

The partnership is also GoPro's first direct collaboration with a major sports league and gives the company more exposure as the NHL's "Official Partner," TechCrunch reported. GoPro also has an opportunity to advertise its brand on NHL broadcast feeds, on NHL.com and the league's social media channels.

NHL players will begin capturing footage with GoPro cameras starting this weekend during this year's NHL All-Star Weekend, which will take place in Columbus, Ohio, Engadget reported. The league will also use its own cameras to record Sunday's game.
