The Los Angeles Clippers will introduce Doc Rivers on Wednesday as the team's new head coach. The press conference begins at 2 p.m. ET. Watch the free live stream HERE.
After two weeks of back and forth negotiations, the Clippers will announce Rivers as the head coach and Senior Vice President of Basketball. The deal, a three-year contract worth $21 million, was completed on Tuesday.
The Boston Celtics, who released Rivers early from his contract, are being compensated with the Clippers' 2015 first round draft pick.
Rivers played for the Clippers in the 1991-92 season. He coached the Orlando Magic for four seasons before taking over Boston in 2004, where he won the 2008 NBA Finals. He's one of only four active NBA coaches to have won a title, according to the Clippers' official website.
Rumors about Rivers leaving Boston began in June. He was quiet about returning for another season, and a report later surfaced claiming Rivers felt it "time for a change." Negotiations began with the Clippers and stalled at one point until soon-to-be free agent Chris Paul reportedly urged Los Angeles to reopen talks.
The deal between the Clippers and Celtics prohibits any trade of players between their teams until after the 2013-14 season.
Rivers spoke briefly to ESPN about his decision to leave Boston.
"It was just time," Rivers said. "I really don't think it would be fair to get into all of that right now. I made a decision to talk with all of the Boston media following my press conference with the Clippers (on Wednesday) and I will honor that.
"I'll explain it to everyone then. But to say I was dying to get out of Boston, dying to leave the Celtics, is just wrong. That's not how it was. That's not how I felt."
Rivers, who has a 587-473 record as a coach, inherits All-Star Blake Griffin and possibly Paul. Whereas Boston is looking to undergo a rebuilding period, Rivers is expected to take the Clippers deep into the playoffs next season.
