After cancelling the "single of the week" feature a few weeks ago, many fans weren't happy with Apple. However, the tech company isn't leaving users without free new content.
Digital Trends discovered a new page on the iTunes website that seemed to be the replacement for "New Single of the Week." The page is called "Free on iTunes" and hosts a section for free music and free video. The music section has 16 different tracks from indie bands such as Guster, Hound Mouth and Jauz. Interesting enough, the page doesn't have a link to U2's latest album, which Apple gave away for free in a move considered poor by critics.
The video section features the pilots for the "12 Monkeys" remake, the new Disney children's show "Miles from Tomorowland," "K.C. Undercover" and more.
It's unclear how often Apple plans to update the page or how this page differs from past variations of "Free on iTunes." In years past, iTunes has hosted similar pages. However, this page has more music available for free than any other version iTunes has released before. The page also doesn't list the free iOS apps or podcasts available to users.
This page (as of the publishing of this article) can only be accessed via the U.S. iTunes store. It's unclear if or when Apple will expand the service to an international market.
Apple seems to have made the decision to cancel its "Single of the Week" service without announcing the event or the reasons for the decision. This was confirmed by anonymous sources inside Apple. This move was preceded by Apple's decision to cancel its "12 Days of Music" service.
