Facebook is continuing to focus on gaining more customers from developing areas around the world.
On Monday the company released a new service called Facebook Lite, aimed at people with low-end phones and designed for 2G networks and "areas with limited network connectivity," according to NBC News. A description of the app on the Google Play store for Android apps says it features less than 1 megabyte of storage space, which is much less than your average app.
The eight lucky countries that received Facebook Lite are Bangladesh, Vietnam, Nigeria, Nepal, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
Facebook's push for emerging markets is aimed at solving the problem it has with slow growth in its user base, NBC News reported. Facebook Lite appears to hold potential in solving that problem, having so far obtained over 100,000 downloads and a 4.6-star rating (out of 5 stars) on the app store.
