It appears that one of the bigger FPS franchises of the last generation may be making a comeback. Long live the Chimera!
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited has filed a trademark claim for "Resistance," reports from both The Sixth Axis and NeoGaf claim. The "Resistance" franchise was previously developed by long-time Sony partner and now third-party developer, Insomniac Games. IG let go off the franchise after the poor sales of both "Resistance 3" on the PlayStation 3 and "Resistance: Burning Skies," which was a PlayStation Vita exclusive. The team said then the future of the franchise would be in the hands of another development team with Insomniac CEO Ted Price stating that "they won't be making any more Resistance games." Also, Insomniac's Creative Director Marcus Smith has said he "can definitely see" Insomniac handing off the PlayStation exclusive series to another developer.
There has been no further developments as of this moment as to what this trademark could mean, but it is very possible that something is in the works to bring the "Resistance" franchise to the PS4. Time will tell if Sony will remaster and/or repackage a "Resistance Collection" with "Burning Skies" reworked for the PS4...or they may find a hungry studio willing to take up the mantle and develop another entry in the franchise.
Stay tuned to HNGN for more on this as it develops.
