So, the first "Fantastic Four" trailer hit the interwebs today and it's . . . interesting. It shows the basics of the FF origins: four compatriots are shot into space and something goes horribly awry which grants the four superpowers. It also shows us a young Reed Richards and Ben Grimm, which is something you didn't see often in the original comics as far as I recall. Otherwise, the trailer looks like standard, superhero fare... with a direct nod to several of the trailers for Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar."
It's very telling what they didn't show in this trailer: Victor Von Doom. I'm reaching here, but that could be his voice doing the narration over the images and him lying on the table in the last few seconds, talking to Reed Richards. The Doom character has been a major problem for most people who have read the interview with actor Tony Kebbel, who is playing Doom, and seen some of the images that have leaked online, which are rather awful. It's major departure from what comic fans know and love to hate about Dr. Doom. So, it doesn't shock me that they (almost) entirely left Doom out of the trailer at this stage of the game. Marvel and FOX need positive hype and groundswell for this film because almost everything about it so far has been gloom and (pardon the pun) doom.
Does this trailer dispell any of that? I don't know, honestly...but it does look better than I expected. So far. A nice, one-minute and 30-second trailer isn't indicative of a quality two hour cinematic experience.
The Josh Trank film stars Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, and Tony Kebble as Victor Domashev. It's due in theaters August 7, 2015.
