Two police officers were struck by gunfire after leaving a swearing-in ceremony at a suburban Minneapolis city hall on Monday night before the gunman was fatally shot by another officer.
The shooting occurred as a City Council meeting was wrapping up at New Hope City Hall in the Minneapolis suburb on Monday, sending some local politicians diving for cover and bringing the meeting to an immediate halt, New York Daily News reported. The two officers, whose names have not been released, were in good condition and are expected to survive.
"Everybody get down!" John Elder, a New Hope council member who also works as public information officer of the Minneapolis Police Department, shouted at his fellow council members, according to the chaotic scene caught on cable-access video and posted to YouTube.
"That went right through the door," another council member said. "Somebody got shot."
Around 7:15 p.m. on Monday, the two New Hope police officers had just left the council chambers after having been sworn in when they were confronted by a man armed with a "long gun," who immediately opened fire at them, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office chief deputy Mike Carlson said at a news conference.
As multiple shots were fired outside, video from inside the council chambers showed members taking cover, with Elder brandishing a handgun and saying "Everybody get down!"
Other officers sprung into action and returned fire, killing the unidentified suspect, KARE reported.
Following the shooting, several dozen people were escorted by authorities out of City Hall to the fire station.
Meanwhile, even though police officials did not identify the gunman or give any indication of a possible motive, they stated that they are not looking for any additional suspects, the Associated Press reported.
