Coffee Protein Similar to Morphine, Researchers Say - Could Be Used To Calm Slaughterhouse Animals

Your morning cup of joe makes you feel good, but did you know it makes you feel this good?

Scientists in Brazil discovered a protein in coffee that mimics the pain killer morphine, according to News Corp Australia.

Now, that's a good cup of coffee!

State-owned Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation Embrapa and researchers at th University of Brasilia teamed up and found "previously unknown protein fragments" with "analgesic and mildly tranquilizing" qualities, according to News Corp Australia.

Mice were tested with the naturally occurring opioid peptides and found that the peptides' effects even lasted longer on mice than morphine.

The discovery has "biotechnological potential," Embrapa said, to help calm slaughterhouse animals.
