PlayStation has released a firmware update to fix a problem with its previous firmware update, which left many people's consoles locked or, worse, completely useless.
PlayStation is pushing through the 4.46 patch to fix all of the problems caused by the 4.45 patch. About a week ago, people turned on their consoles to update them in order to allow them to have more control over trophy notifications only to find that, upon reboot, they were locked at the floating ribbon animation.
When others tried to reformat their console to fix the problem, it left the device completely useless or "bricked." Sony pulled the update as soon as it noticed the problem but released no information as to how many people were affected by the broken 4.45 update.
"We have identified the issue related to the Playzstation 3 software update (version 4.45) that impacted a small number of PS3 systems earlier this week. A new PS3 system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves the issue," PlayStation Europe wrote on their Twitter page. "A new system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that will resolve the issue."
Many players were upset by the news they'd have to wait a week with a broken console before Sony cleaned up its own mistake. However, they can take solace in the fact that the company has not only come out with a firmware update to fix the problem, but has detailed instructions for what users should do depending on the severity with which the 4.45 update impacted their console. Instructions can be found from Sony HERE.
PlayStation won a recent public relations battle against its competitor Xbox at this year's E3. Sony's next generation console beat out Microsoft's in terms of public approval. Xbox was even forced to go back on some of their earlier restrictions in order to match what the PlayStation 4 can do. It isn't clear what, if any, impact this recent firmware bug will have on PlayStations public relations record.
