NASA's SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) Observatory: How And Why Is It Testing Earth's Soil (VIDEO)

NASA's SMAP observatory is set for launch atop the Delta II rocket. It will share the Delta II cabin with other cargo, like the tiny FIREBIRD II CubeSats. SMAP plans to study the Earth's soil in order to better understand how to manage our water resources. How and why?
