Free agent Ray Allen reportedly is still undecided about whether to return for his 19th season. The Cleveland Cavaliers, meanwhile, may have decided to move on from the 39-year-old shooting guard.
Allen, whom an ESPN report indicated would begin talking to teams in January, may not be such a sure-bet to return to the NBA. Basketball Insiders' Alex Kennedy reported Allen has yet to consider which, if any, team he would join if he returned this season.
Per Kennedy:
"I've been told that Ray Allen hasn't even thought about what team he'd considered joining yet. He isn't even to that point. Right now, he's enjoying his time with family in Miami and golfing a lot. He's still working out every day (because he's a fitness freak), but he still isn't sure if he'll play this season. Once he makes that decision about playing, then he'll start to consider teams and specific situations.
"I do think Atlanta could be an interesting spot for him though, if he plays, since they are a legitimate contender and have a perfect system for catch-and-shoot players (like Kyle Korver, for example). They haven't really been mentioned in the Allen sweepstakes, but they could make an interesting pitch to him, no doubt."
It's uncertain if Cleveland, who were once considered the frontrunners to sign Allen, still has interest in bringing Allen aboard. The acquisitions of J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert fill the team's need for a wing player and a perimeter defender, leaving the Cavaliers in need of just a backup point guard to round out their roster.
Still, Allen hasn't been ruled out as a possible target. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported LeBron James visited the free agent earlier in January while on vacation in Miami.
"During James' Miami jaunt, the four-time MVP met with free-agent guard and former Miami Heat teammate Ray Allen to try to appeal to the league's all-time leader in 3-pointers again about joining the Cavs this season, multiple sources told ESPN.com," McMenamin wrote.
Other teams reportedly interested in Allen include the San Antonio Spurs, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Washington Wizards.
