Disney is debuting their first Hispanic princess, Elena, next year on it's Disney Junior Channel and Latina fans couldn't be more welcoming.
Princess Elena of Avalor, 16, is a is "a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairy tale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore," the network said in a statement.
She will make her first on-screen appearance in 2016 on a special episode of Sofia the First - Disney Junior Channel's hit show for preschoolers. Soon after that Elena will have her own spin-off series, Elena of Avalor, also set to debut on Disney Junior the same year, reported People.
Elena will be voiced by Dominican Republic-born Aimee Carrero, 26, of ABC Family's Young & Hungry. Teenaged Elena's story begins decades ago when she tried to protect her little sister, Princess Isabel, but ended up being imprisoned in the amulet by evil sorceress, Shuriki. Now Sofia has learned the truth about what happened and "sets out to restore Elena to her human form and help her return to the kingdom of Avalor."
It was revealed in 2012 that Sofia had hints of Hispanic roots, reported People. After announcing on Thursday that they would debut the first Latina princess next year, the positive reactions from fans on Twitter show Dinsey is taking a step in the right direction.
