Val Kilmer, 55, reportedly had a major health scare earlier this week. Sources told TMZ that the "Batman Forever" actor was rushed to the hospital after he started bleeding from his throat. Kilmer was taken to UCLA Medical Center via ALS (Advanced Life Support) and underwent emergency throat surgery.
It's believed that Kilmer suffers from throat tumors, but the actor has never publicly acknowledged any health concerns. TMZ reports that Kilmer's family members are very upset because the actor has known about his throat problem for a while but chose to ignore it.
The Santa Monica Fire Department confirmed to People magazine that a call was placed from Kilmer's home around 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 26. Even though he was transported to the hospital via ALS doesn't mean that his situation was life-threatening.
A spokesperson explained to People that ALS paramedics are often sent to more serious emergencies because they can administer medicine and IVs to the patient while en route to the hospital. Private ambulances tend to respond to minor injuries.
It's not clear if Kilmer is still in the hospital, but sources told TMZ that he is now recovering. The "Top Gun" star was spotted at a Clippers game with his son earlier this month wearing a giant scarf around his neck, and last summer Kilmer was seen running errands looking noticeably thinner.
