Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks had a wild finish, with the game's two top plays coming on both sides of the ball in the fourth quarter. Seahawks receiver Jermaine Kearse made an incredible catch down the stretch, but several plays later Patriots rookie cornerback Malcolm Butler sealed New England's 28-24 win with a game-saving interception.
Kearse made an incredible catch late in the fourth quarter to keep alive Seattle's hopes of winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Kearse and Butler both went in the air for a pass from Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Butler deflected the pass, but the football fell right in Kearse's lap after he landed on the ground.
New England lost the 2007 season's Super Bowl because of a spectacular catch from New York Giants receiver David Tyree, but the team had better luck Sunday night. From about one yard out in the final minute of the game, Seattle made the questionable decision to call a pass play. Butler, an undrafted rookie out of West Alabama, read the pass and cut in for the goal-line interception.
"I made a play to help my team win," Butler said after the game, via Yahoo Sports. "I've worked so hard in practice and I just wanted to play so bad and help my team out. I got out there and did exactly what I needed to do to help my team win."
The interception clinched New England's win, giving Patriots coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady their fourth championship together.
