Facebook Separates Ads from Sex Toys; Social Media Site Looks to Make Marketers Happy

Facebook announced today they will stop putting certain ads on pages that are deemed offensive, according to VentureBeat.com.

Through a review done by the social media company, it was established that marketers did not want their advertisements showing up on pages or groups that were controversial or possibly of bad taste. This is most likely because companies do not want their product associated with the subject—possibly a theme that is violent or sexually offensive—of that page or group.

According to the announcement, starting Monday Facebook will begin going through pages (timelines geared towards a specific brand) and groups to find which ones should be labeled as “ad-restricted.”

If there are ads already present on the page, they will be removed.

In the announcement, Facebook gave the example of a page made by a sex toy business. Previously the social media company felt the page was worthy of being accompanied by ads from other types of businesses. However, this page will now receive the “ad-restricted” label.

“Like any digital platform, we’re not going to be perfect, but we will be much better. We’ll continue to work aggressively on this issue with advertisers,” said in their news release. “While we already have rigorous review and removal policies for content against our terms, we recognize we need to do more to prevent situations where ads are displayed alongside controversial Pages and Groups. So we are taking action.”

Currently, the social media site will have workers put the “ad-restricted” labels up one-by-one. However, the company hopes to soon have a method to have this done automatically.
