Twitter CEO on Instagram Video: 'People Can Do Whatever They Want to Do'

When Instagram got video the social media world exploded with hastags like #RIPVine and other phrases to signal the end of Twitter’s video sharing service. While some of the Vine fans were worried that fate of the social media tool, there is one person who was not according to the Washington Post—Twitter CEO Dick Costolo.

Costolo explained Wednesday he will not fret over the Instagram (owned by Facebook) upgrade. “People can do whatever they want to do,” said Costolo during a Q&A assembly at the Brookings Institution in Washington. He added Twitter is putting their efforts into company goals rather than being anxious about another company’s attempt tocopy them.

According to Costolo, the social media company has a “very specific vision of where we want to go” with Vine—namely allowing users to make and share videos with as many people as possible.

“Other people can replicate that or take pieces of it if that’s what they want to do,” said Costolo. “If we do what we want to do, and go where we want to go, we don’t have to worry about what that guy’s doing over there.”

In addition to Instagram, Costolo also talked about how Twitter makes it possible to have large discussion about topics such as politics, news, and entertainment.

The CEO said he looks at twitter as a “global town square” and wants to make the social media service available to everyone around the world.

One person asked Costolo about how social media sites should deal with government requests for information—in light of the recent story about PRISM from the National Security Agency.

“We’re going to principled,” said Costolo. However, he also said the company will adhere to the laws in whichever country the social media site is in.
