Indianapolis Colts safety Joe Lefeged was arrested Saturday morning in Washington, DC. After allegedly trying to flee the scene, Lefeged was taken into custody on five charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, CNN reports.
Lefeged was a passenger in a Chevrolet Camaro that was driving erratically, according to a DC Metro police spokesman. The erractic driving caught the attention of police, who then tried to make a traffic stop.
It's unclear whether the driver first led the police on a chase or if the occupants immediately fled from the vehicle, but Lefeged and another passenger were eventually arrested after fleeing on foot. They were taken into custody without incident, and police are still trying to locate the driver.
The incident occurred at 12:05 a.m. on Saturday.
Lefeged and the other passenger, Aaron Timothy Wilson, both were arrested on the same charges. The five charges include (via CNN): "carrying a firearm without a license, having an unregistered firearm, having unregistered ammunition, presence of a firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of an open container of alcohol."
An H&K .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol belonging to Lefeged was discovered underneath the passenger seat, according to CNN's law enforcement source.
Lefeged, 25, is originally from Gaithersburg, Md. The Colts signed him in 2011 as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers. He's played in every game of his NFL career, primarily as a special teams player; he started four games last season.
