The burglar, who brutally and repeatedly beat a mother in front of her 3-year-old child while the nanny cam recorded the tragic encounter, has been caught in Manhattan after police released an old mug shot of the man, New Jersey news reports. (Video below)
Shawn Custis, 42, was arrested in Inwood, Manhattan and has been charged with first degree attempted murder in connection with the June 21 assault on the Millburn mother. He is also charged with first degree robbery, 2nd degree burglary and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. He is being held on $750,000 bail.
County chief of detectives Anthony Ambrose said Friday that Custis was being transported to an undisclosed location in New Jersey, the Huffington Post notes.
After he was captured, a horrified neighbor of Custis' girlfriend in Inwood, New York, said she had previously found the convicted robber in her apartment unannounced.
Police and FBI released a mug shot from earlier robbery incidents. Custis was released from prison in December after he served a sentence for burglaries in New Jersey.
In the violent video, Custis is seen entering the lounge through a window and begins brutally beating the unidentified mother on the sofa, while her 3-year-old sits right next to them. An 18-month old toddler lies asleep upstairs. No children were harmed during the incident. However, the mother is seen being punched, kicked, choked, slapped, shoved and ultimately, thrown down the stairs before Custis makes his way out of the home with stolen goods.
The mother, who never screamed during the incident in fear of alarming her children and putting them in danger, was taken to the hospital and treated for a concussion and extensive bruising on her face and body, according to NBC News. She had several chipped teeth and received stitches near her mouth.
