Taiwan: Twelve Confirmed Dead in TransAsia Crash, Many Still Missing in Taipei (BREAKING, PHOTO)

Twelve people have been confirmed dead after a TransAsia flight in Taiwan crashed on Wednesday while carrying 53 passengers and five crew members, according to CNN International.

The ATR72 twin-engine turboprop crashed after taking off from Taipei Songshan Airport. The aircraft hit the Nanhu Bridge and a taxi before smacking into the Keelung River a little before 11 a.m. (Tuesday, 10 p.m. EST). The plane was headed for the island of Kinmen.

The passengers of the taxi were in stable condition when they were transported to a hospital, according to CNN International.

Many of the aircraft passengers are still missing. Lifeboats are in place, pulling survivors from the wreckage. According to CNN International, reports state that 31 passengers were tourists from Xiamen, China. There were two children on the plane.

The plane was not even a year old and had passed a safety inspection on Jan. 26. Taiwanese officials have not offered a reason as to what caused the crash.
