Actress Lucy Lawless, known for her roles in "Xenia: Warrior Princess," "Spartacus" and "Battlestar Galactica," is set to play "Mama" Morton in the hit Broadway musical, "Chicago," The Inquisitor reports.
The 45-year old will take to the stage for a three-night production at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles along with "True Blood" star Stephen Moyer, who will play Billing. Drew Carrey will also appear in the show as Amos.
The production will run from July 26 to July 28, and Lawless will fly out from New Zealand this week to begin preparing.
"I could not believe that they had cast Lucy from New Zealand in this iconic musical, a classical American art form, on a hallowed stage like the Hollywood Bowl and they let me [be involved]. I didn't dare hope it would happen, and it bloody did. I am beyond excited," she told Stuff New Zealand.
Afterwards Lawless will fly back to New Zealand to prepare for her role as Velma Kelly in the Auckland Theatre Company's own production of "Chicago," which will run from November 1 through November 24.
Lawless made headlines in February 2012 when the actress was arrested in connection with the Greenpeace protest, and pleaded guilty to unlawfully being on a ship. A New Zealand judge ordered the actress to pay $547 in reparations and complete 120 hours of community service, which Lawless was happy to do, having no regrets about her involvement in the protest against oil drilling.
Queen Latifah played Mama Morton in the film version of the musical.
