GoPro to Launch Roku Channel for Watching Sports, Musicians

GoPro is getting deeper into the media market, announcing Thursday that it will soon have a new channel on popular streaming media player Roku.

The channel, which will debut in the spring, will feature original content created by GoPro as well as content submitted by users, according to Quartz. The personal camera maker is also looking to provide more than just videos of extreme sports, as Adam Dornbusch, head of programming at GoPro, said some of the new videos involve musicians and animals.

The move puts GoPro in competition with HBO, NFL, Netflix and other big entertainment companies that have their own digital channels on Roku. The streaming service's own channels, one of which being for the NHL, also present a challenge.

The Roku channel will be the latest to debut from GoPro, as the company has already launched a channel for the Xbox One gaming console, The Next Web reported.

Dornsburch said GoPro will feature footage shot from the company's partnerships with the NHL and the X-Games on the Roku channel, and that the company would like to eventually include more professional sports in its channels, Quartz reported. He added that while the channel will not include any live footage, GoPro plans on adding this type of footage once the company figures out how to make it more "compelling."

Additional features will include "how-to" and behind-the-scene videos on how videos are shot and the ability to pause videos to see what cameras and other products were used to shoot them.

Dornbusch said GoPro has more platforms planned for fans in the future, adding that "This is only the beginning."
