The man responsible for shooting and killing an Army veteran in an act of road rage in Tampa, Fla., turned himself in to police on Monday, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
Police arrested Jerome Hayes of St. Cloud, Fla., and charged him with first-degree murder when he turned himself in at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Detectives from Hillsborough County seized Hayes' car in order to search it and see if it was the "silver of gray Taurus" a witness described.
Fred Turner, 47, was shot and killed after calling 911 to alert them to a car that was following him.
"While on the phone the caller stated that the vehicle following him had earlier pulled up next to his vehicle and someone displayed what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon to him," a report from the 911 dispatcher read. "The caller stayed on the phone with 911 operators and the dispatchers heard multiple gunshots."
It is not completely clear what provoked the shooting. While on the line with dispatchers Turner gave no indication of knowing why he was being followed by the gunman, according to ABC news.
"He did nothing wrong," Lillian Schlesak, Turner's former wife, told the Orlando Sentinel. "He was a wonderful man and if anyone knows anything they need to come forward."
Road rage is thought to be the motivating factor in the shooting although Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee told reporters that police will continue to interview witnesses and explore other possible motives, reports The Inquisitr.
"We're going to have to reconstruct that from the 911 tapes," Gee said. "But we know that we have the shooting apparently on tape."
When Turner moved from Illinois to Florida he started working the hospitality industry, specifically in housekeeping. Turner had most recently been working for the Caribe Royale All-Suite and Convention Center in Orlando.
"Fred certainly was an excellent worker and he's going to be missed," Donna Smithberger, head of Human Resources at the hotel, told the Orlando Sentinel.
