Aaron Hernandez may no longer be a New England Patriot, but his jersey is one of the hottest selling items online.
According to the Boston Globe, John Lamothe, a former fan of Hernandez, wanted the jersey out of his house after learning more about the reported details of the ex-NFL player's case.
"I thought about giving it to Goodwill," Lamothe told the Globe. "But I didn't think anybody would want it."
Lamothe put the jersey up for auction on eBbay thinking he would make $15 off the sale.
The 23-year-old former Patriot's tight end was arrested last Wednesday and charged with murder in the death of Odin Lloyd. Before Hernandez was charged, the team announced his release on Twitter, followed by an official statement.
The NFL franchised sub-sequentially removed all Hernandez merchandise, and told the public that The Patriots ProShop at Gillette Stadium will offer fans who bought a Hernandez jersey at the store the chance to exchange it for another player's on July 6 and 7.
However, the Internet soon emerged with online sellers of the Hernandez memorabilia. According to the Globe, eBay is filled with heavy bidding of the merchandise, driving up the item's prices. The question reportedly on sellers' minds is who would want to by the jersey?
"I can't think of any reason why people would want it," Lynn L'Heureux of Oxford, whose $100 Hernandez jersey is up to $127 on eBay told the Globe. "They might think it will go up in value later on, and maybe it will, but I'm not interested. I just don't want it in my possession. I want to use the money to buy a jersey that reflects my pride in the Patriots."
The Globe reported Brett Iannazzo, 16, from Methuen, put his signed Hernandez Super Bowl jersey on eBay after the flames of the scandal widely ignited.
"I loved Hernandez. I had his rookie jersey. Whenever I got a double in baseball, I'd do his end zone dance; take out the briefcase and make it rain,"Iannazzo said. "Now, I'm done with that. I'm done with him."
