Washington Redskins RUMORS: Team Targeting Pass-Rusher in NFL Draft?

The Washington Redskins have a first-round pick for the first time since handing over a king's ransom for the right to draft Robert Griffin III in 2012. With holes all over the roster, the Redskins have been rumored to be interested in just about everyone at the top of the draft. But ESPN NFL Draft Insider Todd McShay believes that Washington will target one of the many talented pass-rushers with the fifth overall pick.

"The Redskins need a pass-rusher - often-injured ROLB Brian Orakpo is a free agent and not expected to return - and Ray is a terror off the edge," McShay wrote. "He is relentless at pressuring the quarterback, combining outstanding first-step quickness, effective hands and impressive redirect skills. He also continues to get stronger versus the run and has bulked up into the 250-pound range. He was incredibly productive at Mizzou, finishing fifth in the FBS with 13 sacks last season.

"This is another spot where [Marcus] Mariota could come under consideration, but I've got Washington addressing its defense here."

McShay is right to point out Washington's need for extra pass-rushers. Orakpo recorded just a half sack before suffering the third torn pectoral injury of his career. He is neither elite nor healthy enough to count on consistently at this point. The Redskins used a second-round pick on linebacker Trent Murphy last year. Murphy impressed coaches with his work ethic and motor though his ceiling appears to be lower than Washington had hoped.

Ray, meanwhile, flashed elite skills when getting after the quarterback. The former Tiger finished his college career with 17.5 sacks and 34 tackles for a loss in two plus seasons. ESPN Scouts have given him a 95 grade as a prospect, highlighting his instincts and work ethic.

"Sniffs out screen and chases like a wild dog," ESPN Scouts said. "Relentless motor. Zero issue with effort or toughness."
