'A-Force': Marvel Debuts an All-Female Avengers Squad

Girl power, indeed.

Marvel Comics has announced its first all-women Avengers team on Friday. This new super-team will be called the "A-Force"... and try not to confuse that with the A-Team or the X-Force.

The "A-Force" will be comprised of She-Hulk, Dazzler, Medusa, Nico Minoru and many others, including at least one new superhero, a "cosmically powered" heroine named Singularity, according to a report at Entertainment Weekly.

As the Marvel Comics universe prepares to conclude its three-year time arc and transition into "Secret Wars," the new, all-ladies Avengers squad will "take over and lead the way," the company stated in the announcement.

"A-Force" will be co-written by G. Willow Wilson, who made Ms. Marvel as a Muslim, and Marguerite Bennett, who wrote Marvel's "Angela" standalone; X-Men artist Jorge Molina will be handling the art duties on the title.

"Secret Wars," billed as one of the biggest shakeups in Marvel history, starts in May...and finds the old Avengers teams (some of which were all-male, some of which were co-ed) disbanded.

"We've purposefully assembled a team composed of very different characters...from disparate parts of the Marvel U, with very different power sets, identities and ideologies," Wilson said. "They'll all have to come together to answer some big questions: What would you sacrifice to succeed? What is being a hero worth?"

Though "A-Force" is its first all-female Avengers team, it's not the first Marvel team title to feature only women. In fact, it's the fifteenth; the most recent was last year's "X-Men" run, which had only women on the squad. Marvel says its female fanbase has been growing exponentially as of late, and with the emergence of strong and cool characters like Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and Black Widow, it's very easy to see why.
