Yes, I've heard the same rumors you have about the New England Patriots' apparent willingness to pay cornerback Darrelle Revis' $20 million salary in 2015 and take the $25 million cap hit. I also read a few newspaper articles that swore that Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster were secretly running the Illuminati. Bill Belichick would never commit that much money to one player. Even Tom Brady has restructured his contract a few times.
But that doesn't mean they want to move on from Revis. Far from it, in fact.
Team President Jonathan Kraft hinted that a long-term extension for Revis was currently in the works.
"People understand that [the option's] a placeholder and we'll get to work on trying to make [an extension] happen," Kraft said, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com.
Kraft went on to praise the 29-year-old cornerback and all that he has done in his one season as a Patriot.
"He's been everything and more since he's been here," Kraft said. "Patriots fans knew what he was like on the field, but didn't know what he was like off it. Having worn green all those years and the blind emotion we all have toward the Jets, you have one perception of the man. And the man is very different than that. He's a great guy and he works hard. There is no over-ego to him and he's a great teammate. He's been a real pleasure to have him as part of the organization."
New England has just over a month to work out a long-term deal with Revis before the beginning of free agency. If the two sides cannot come to an agreement on a new deal, the Pats could elect not to exercise the expensive second-year option and allow Revis to hit the open market. If that were to occur, AFC East rivals such as the Bills and Jets are considered to be interested in bidding for Revis' services.
