Spotify, the popular media streaming service has been updated for iOS devices. The new version, 0.7.1 adds a new "Discover" feature for iPhone users that will allow Spotify to make music suggestions based on what they and their friends have been listening to.
"Discover" was first launched on desktop platforms in late May. Tuesday's update brings the feature to mobile devices. Not only will users be able to get new suggestions for music they might enjoy, it brings the degree to which they enjoy already discovered music to the next level. Now tour dates are integrated with Spotify, providing users to see when a band they like is touring near their city or town.
The application now features a few updates to the "now playing" view as well. The screen now has an "Up Next" queue for the iPhone. This allows users to see what will be playing next and arrange their current music queue without having to make an entire playlist. In other words, if you want to listen to a one song when the one you're currently listening to is done, you can queue it up before the current song has finished playing.
However, if you're the type of person who enjoys the thrill of creating and sharing playlists with your friends and followers, Spotify has something for you as well. The new mobile service finally lets you edit and create playlists from the iPhone.
Spotify for iOS is a free 30.4-megabyte download, according to AppleInsider. Users can use the radio service for free but subscribers who pay the extra cost for Spotify Premium can utilize all of the new features for the new mobile update.
The new update is likely a way for Spotify to pre-empt the redesign of the iOS 7. With the launch of the new iOS in the fall, iTunes Radio will be in direct competition with Spotify, as well as Pandora and other music streaming services. Spotify likely hopes their new update will keep it from looking unappealing in the face of iTunes Radio.
