"The Bible" television series produced by Mark Burnett has proved popular among audiences and now Comcast's NBC said it has sealed a deal to air the sequel to History's surprise hit show.
NBC's version will be titled A.D.: Beyond the Bible and will continue the story after Christ's death, according to a Bloomberg report. "The Bible" miniseries was created by husband-and-wife team Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.
"I followed the development process of 'The Bible' closely with (executive producer) Mark (Burnett) and knew that the story was far from over after Christ's crucifixion," Bob Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement.
"In fact, what happened in the aftermath -- which is essentially the beginning of Christianity -- is utterly fascinating. The day after 'The Bible' premiered, I told Mark we were on board with no hesitation for the follow-up miniseries," he added.
"Our new series, 'A.D.: Beyond the Bible,' is another massive project and a major commitment, but it's a story that has to be told," Burnett and his wife and executive producer, Roma Downey, said in a statement. "It's a story that changed the world. We look forward to making this an enormous television event on NBC."
There is a market for the religious-based show - primarily consisting of evangelical Christians. The show received 11.4 million viewers in overnight ratings during its five-week run, according to Nielen's figures. The series averaged about 11 million viewers per episode.
The History Channel is owned by Walt Disney Co and privately held Hearst Corp.
