A Virginia pastor who claimed he was robbed and shot after he stopped to help a biracial family made the whole thing up, police said according to the New York Daily News.
George Hunley, a pastor in Louisa county, claims he was being a good Samaritan when he stopped to help a black man, white woman and their baby whose car broke down outside Charlottesville last Thursday.
The 53-year-old pastor told Louisa county sheriffs that the couple pulled out a revolver and robbed him, but not before Hunley allegedly struggled with the black male and was shot twice in the process.
Hunley told police he thought he broke the man's arm because he heard "something snap," the Daily News reported.
He also said the couple fled with his wallet and checkbook - but that claim led to his downfall because police later found those items during a search of Hunley's car.
The pastor was arrested Friday and charged with knowingly giving a false report of a crime to law enforcement with the intent to mislead, according to the newspaper.
A part of Hunley's story that wasn't false, however, was him being shot. He was treated for gunshot wounds at UVA Medical Center and later released.
Investigators are trying to sort out how he got shot.
Hunley, who was released on bond, told WTVR the entire situation was "ridiculous."
