At Wizard World Madison Comic Con this past weekend, "The Crow" creator James O'Barr discussed the long in-the-works reboot of the film, including the issues that the project faces and how he wants Sam Witwer for the lead role.
Witwer has a strong genre following due to appearing on shows like "Being Human," "Battlestar Galatica," and "Smallville." He has also voiced Darth Maul in the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" series and was the model and voice of Starkiller in the two successful "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" videogames. His most recent gig was voicing of Orm/Ocean Master in the disappointing "Justice League: Throne of Atlantis" animated flick from Warner Bros.
O'Barr, who has actively taken part in script revisions and serves as a creative consultant, has his heart set on Witwer to play Eric Draven, according to Blastr. He also revealed that he'd spoken with Witwer about the role on several occasions, though nothing is set in stone as of yet.
Regardless of the fact that O'Barr feels Witwer has the looks and talent to play the tragic character, he still needs to make Corin Hardy, the new director on the film, see what he sees in Witwer. When O'Barr told Witwer about the opportunity, Witwer responded that he'd "mow the creator's lawn for the rest of their lives for the chance."
In addition to casting, O'Barr spoke bluntly about the other problem that the film faces: money being the most pressing reason that the project has not begun filming as of yet. On top of that, former director F. Javier Gutierrez and Luke Evans, who was originally attached as the star, both recently flew the coop.
I'm of the mind that these issues are cropping up for a reason...and the reason is that there is no need for a reboot of this film. Just leave it alone and let the 1994 film, on which star Brandon Lee was accidentally killed while filming a scene, stand on its own. Is nothing sacred these days?
