Jamie Brewer: New York Fashion Week's First Model With Down Syndrome

American Horror Story's Jamie Brewer will be the first model with Down syndrome to ever walk the runway at New York Fashion Week.

"Young girls and even young women ... [see me] and say 'hey, if she can do it so can I,'" Brewer, an advocate for people with intellectual disabilities, told TODAY. "It's a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and showing who they are."

Brewer will be modeling as part of designer Carrie Hammer's "Role Models Not Runway Models" campaign. The campaign is designed to represent the women who buy Hammer's designs.

Brewer was nominated to model in the campaign by Katie Driscoll, co-founder of Changing the Face of Beauty, a nonprofit that encourages media to include people with disabilities. Driscoll told Hammer she dreamed of seeing a good role model for her daughter, Grace, in the campaign who also has Down syndrome.

"I explained to her how important it is for my daughter to have role models like [Brewer] to see that [anything] is possible," Driscoll told TODAY.

Hundreds of other women were nominated to be a part of Hammer's campaign, but Hammer told TODAY that Brewer really stuck out as a great role model in Driscoll's nomination.

For the campaign Hammer designed Brewer a custom dress to highlight her amazing qualities.

"'American Horror Story' is dark, scary, bewitching so we had to go with black and Jamie has a beautiful body with a teeny waist and curves and we went with an A-line," Hammer told TODAY.

As for Brewer, she can't wait for her spin down the runway.
